Monkeys swinging for album record

Arctic Monkeys
After an incredible first day's sales, it looks like the Arctic Monkeys could soon have the fastest selling debut album ever in the UK.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not was predicted to sell about 60,000 copies in one day, but instead, Monday's sales reached nearly 120,000.

Shops now think more than 350,000 copies will be bought by Sunday.

That will take them past the previous record of 306,631, set by Hear'Say's first album, Popstars, in March 2001.

The Sheffield band's record label Domino has only sent 250,000 copies of the album to record stores, and they'll have to ship lots more to keep up with
demand.

They've already sold more albums than the rest of the top 20 combined.

Phil Penman, from music shop HMV, said: "We knew day one sales were going to be big, but nobody could have expected them to be this huge.

"It's pretty phenomenal, really - it's as if they'd won the X Factor, but achieving the same kind of sales without the benefit of a massive TV audience."

The four-piece have already had two number one singles, I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor, and When The Sun Goes Down, which went to the top spot on
Sunday.
